Posted: 24 Apr 2022 07:05 AM PDT I have an undergraduate degree in math but I'm more of an enthusiast. I've always been interested in Gödel's incompleteness theorems since I read the popular science book Incompleteness by Rebecca Goldstein in college and I thought about this question the other day. Ultimately, I'm wondering if, given a consistent formal system, are almost all true statements unprovable? How would one even measure the cardinality of the set of true-but-unprovable theorems? Is this even a sensible question to pose? My knowledge of this particular area is limited so explainations-like-I'm-an-undergrad would be most appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Does incest carry forward from PAST generations? Posted: 24 Apr 2022 10:55 AM PDT Let's say one person (or animal; I've been reading about the Isle Royale wolves) is the product of incest. That person goes on to reproduce with an unrelated individual. Would the offspring's DNA reflect the incest in their grandparents' generation or would they be indistinguishable from someone whose grandparents are unrelated? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 23 Apr 2022 11:56 AM PDT What's the difference between reporting limit, detection limit and quantitation limit in groundwater monitoring? I would really appreciate an explanation of the relationship between these concepts, as they relate to the measurement of analytes in groundwater or other sources. For context, I'm working in the field, in IT, as an outsider without a background in chemistry or environmental monitoring, and it almost looks to me that these terms are used inconsistently. An explanation, or even a link to an article for someone without a chemistry background, would be helpful. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
