How advanced of a mechanical computer could be built with the technology available in the Middle Ages?

Posted: 06 Sep 2019 04:34 PM PDT

I've enjoyed watching Minecraft redstone computer videos over the years and was just thinking what could actually be done IRL with a giant mechanical computer. I'm thinking of a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court type of situation, where a modern computer engineer suddenly is stuck in the middle ages with their level of manufacturing, but has the resources of a medieval kingdom and modern knowledge of computer architecture, theory and algorithms to use towards building the ultimate mechanical computing device.

Beyond just raw computing power, what sort of peripherals could be constructed? Storage arrays, displays, printers, etc?

Are Mammals And Other Extinct Non-Mammalian Synapsids Part Of The Reptile Clade?

Posted: 07 Sep 2019 06:48 AM PDT

Are we mammals and other extinct Synapsids Reptiles if we used the cladistics system rather than the linnaean system? I've read Wikipedia articles and threads from other sites that Synapsids which includes us Mammals are not part of the Reptile clade but rather sharing a common ancestry with them in the Amniota clade which is part of the Reptiliomorpha clade. I want some clarification from any reputable scientist or biologist here that can answer my question. Thank you.

Can doctors identify lung issues just from listening to them with a stethoscope?

Posted: 07 Sep 2019 04:24 AM PDT

I've recently read about the problems with vape cartridges. I have been vaping THC oil, 1-2 grams a month for 3 years. I had a physical early this year and the doctor told me my lungs sounded good and my blood test looked normal.

Are the illnesses that have been affecting people who vape detectable by these types of tests? Are most of their illnesses permanent or are they curable with antibiotics? I had walking pneumonia last winter-- not sure if it was due to the harsh winter or to vaping but it went away after a week on a Z-Pak.

Can reintroduced, formerly native species become invasive?

Posted: 07 Sep 2019 03:43 AM PDT

If for example, a particular species has been extinct in a particular environment, could it's reintroduction lead to further disruption of the ecosystem? If yes, what factors would play into it being invasive?

When your brain releases chemicals as response to things than happen suddenly in our environment (dopamine, adrenaline, etc), where exactly do they come from? Are they made on the spot or all stored somewhere waiting to be released?

If Ribosomes are made of protein, but are involved in Protein synthesis, where do THEIR proteins come from?

Posted: 07 Sep 2019 03:18 AM PDT

Studying higher biology in prep for going to Uni (later in life) and we are doing protein synthesis. If the ribosomes are made of rRNA and Protein, where is the protein made that forms the ribosome?

Why don't gravity powered clocks stop while winding?

Posted: 06 Sep 2019 10:56 PM PDT

I understand how the basic pendulum clock works, and why the pendulum doesn't stop under normal use and all that, but why when I'm raising the weight on mine doesn't the pendulum then stop? I've tried winding mine back up very slowly and it doesn't seem to miss a beat, even though the force is now in the other direction. I would think there is some kind of ratchet it there allowing me to wind it back up, but then is doesn't seem like it would keep going once I've taken the weight off the escapement in the process of winding. Any ideas?

Are the path integral formulation and canonical quantization different ontologically?

Posted: 06 Sep 2019 12:12 PM PDT

As far as I can tell the path integral formulation has only non-operator fields as it's physical picture. Whereas the cannonical quantization has fockspace and then operator-fields acting on it.

These seem to be fundamentally different pictures of what's going on. Are they? Also, what's the physical/ontological distinction between nonrelativistic QM and each of the approaches to QFT above.
